Hi! My name is Emma Capdeville, I am 21 years old and studying Film and Media at Newcastle University in England.
My course helps me develop hands-on filmmaking skills such as cinematography, story-telling and editing through documentary production. In parallel, I also explore pressing issues in social studies, anthropology and geopolitics.
I aim to specialize in news reporting and documentary filmmaking. I have a strong passion for collecting memories through film and documenting people's stories, I always have my camera with me! I am curious about the world and its challenges but also passionate and dedicated to my work.
I am Franco-British and love sharing my culture with others but also learning and exchanging with people from around the world.
Practice makes perfect Present
This semester, I have been working on perfecting my journalistic skills through my Broadcasting journalism and TV module. I have learnt so much in the past months, from setting up my first piece to camera to perfecting my scripting, whilst also refining the skills I had previously learned. For my final project, I will be making a 5-minute long news feature focusing on charities who integrate asylum seekers and refugees into local communities of the North East of England. An exciting project that I cannot wait to share with you all.
Let's write! September 2025 - Present
After making my way back to university following a very eventful gap year, I am happy to say that I will be focusing on my role as a contributing writer for The Courier. I'm so excited to start writing about the world and depict its challenges through rigorous journalistic research. Keep an eye out for future articles!
Discovering Diplomacy April 2025
During my trip to Ghana, I had the honor of discovering the diplomatic world and its many professions, particularly within the French Cultural Cooperation Department - through a short internship at the French Embassy. A truly insightful experience that helped me gain a better understanding of the French diplomatic mission in Ghana. I also had the opportunity to attend a GCERF conference which is a global fund that seeks to prevent violent extremism and terrorism across the world. This was a great way for me to understand how Embassies take part in collaborating with international organisations to promote peace and security. Observing these interactions allowed me to appreciate the complexity and importance of diplomatic collaboration in addressing global challenges.
Filming a documentary in Ghana?! March 2025
In March 2025, I landed in the beautiful country of Ghana! Over the course of a month, I aimed to capture and give a sense of the Ghanaian culture through a short documentary film that I am currently working on. This was the perfect opportunity for me to practice my filmmaking skills and push my creative abilities whilst fully immersing myself in my participant's life.
Hello France 24! August 2024 - February 2025
In August 2024, I started an internship at France 24 in Paris! Over the course of 6 months I had the opportunity to work within the editorial team as an Assistant to the Editor in Chief. This experience was a chance to discover the heart of a dynamic and responsive newsroom whilst continuously providing logistical support to the team I was working with. Engaging daily with global news means understanding the importance of journalistic work, especially in the face of the current geopolitical issues we are all confronted with today. But most of all, I had the chance to work alongside passionate journalists and to interact with numerous guests whom I welcomed and accompanied on the sets of France 24. Every single piece of advice has allowed me to develop and enrich my critical thinking skills. I truly grew over the span of these 6 months and I could not be more grateful for everything this internship has taught me.
Let's volunteer at the Olympic Games! July-August 2024
Surely one the best experiences of my life! Living the Olympic Games through the eyes of a volunteer has enabled me to discover the scenes of an international sporting event but also meet many incredible people within the public as well as the team I worked with. Volunteering is to devote your energy at the service of other people, and during my mission I welcomed any occasion to do so. The reward to giving this energy was the thousands of smiles, laughs and cheers that resonated throughout the Olympic site. A truly unforgettable experience that has taught me so much over the course of two amazing weeks.
